Roadheader vs TBM: What Are the Differences?
The difference is the face. A roadheader (boom-type gallery or tunnel machine) cuts selectively — a partial face. A TBM (tunnel boring machine) advances the designed section largely as a full face. Both are mechanized excavation; the method is not the same.
What is a roadheader?
Crawler chassis, boom-mounted cutter, loading and transfer. The operator walks the head across the face; the section comes out in steps. For the cycle and assemblies see what a roadheader is.

What is a TBM?
A TBM bores the tunnel at a section set by cutter diameter and shield arrangement. The profile is not freely “drawn” during the drive; it follows the machine design. That approach is discussed on long headings whose section is fixed from the start. Setup, logistics and alignment planning sit at a different scale from a roadheader job.
How do their excavation methods differ?
Selective / partial-face work takes the face in pieces. Full-face work advances the geometry the cutter allows. That is a job-profile difference, not a score.
| Topic | Roadheader | TBM |
|---|---|---|
| Excavation face | Partial face (selective) | Full face |
| Geometry | Can be steered during the work | Set by machine design |
| Often discussed for | Galleries, side openings, changing outline | Long headings with a fixed section |
| GTA50 range | Yes (10T–100T roadheaders) | No |
Flexibility and excavation geometry
Where the section may be revised or a gallery connection is required, selective cutting can be more adaptable in principle. That is not a claim that a roadheader is better than a TBM on every job. A TBM is assessed on its own terms for a long, constant section. Flexibility is one factor among geology, section, programme, logistics and cost.
Choosing equipment for project conditions
“Which is better?” is the wrong question. Section, drive length, ground uncertainty and site constraints decide which mechanized method is even on the table. The label “tunneling machine” can hide two different solutions.
GTA50 builds roadheaders. It does not manufacture TBMs and does not claim a roadheader replaces a TBM. Published models and tables are on the products pages. Configuration questions go to contact.
